Romance blooms for Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan in the new film

Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan fall for each other in the trailer for new film ‘Ammonite,’ which was released last week.

The romance drama features Winslet as British Palaeontoglist Mary Anning and is inspired by her life in the 19th century. The film depicts the budding relationship between Anning and her new apprentice Charlotte Murchison (Ronan.)

Director Francis Lee is also responsible for directing the critically acclaimed ‘God’s Own Country’ in 2017 which focussed on the life of a gay farmer in Yorkshire and the film is set to win at the Oscars.

However, Lee has faced criticism for his decision to portray Anning as a gay woman as this has never been explicitly confirmed in history. Barbara Anning, a relative of Mary, has told news outlets she does not believe there is any evidence to back up “portraying her as a gay woman.”

In response Lee has said the film is “not a bio-pic” and has since tweeted: “After seeing queer history be routinely ‘straightened’ is it not permissible to view that person within another context?”

‘Ammonite’ will get its first screening at the Toronto Film Festival next month after the Cannes Film Festival was cancelled due to Covid-19.

The film is set to be released in the UK in 2021.
