Review: Requiem by Joey Collins

Requiem is the new EP by Joey Collins, Nottingham and Derby’s answer to Kurt Cobain, with a voice that carries a full range of emotions.
A few of the songs from his EP sound quite haunting and carry that world-weary feel to them. Joey’s music spans several types of genres from alternative rock to soul, ambient to dance, including acoustic.
He takes his musical influences from rock and roll greats such as Kurt Cobain, Elliot Smith, Richard Ashcroft and Jeff Buckley to name but only a few. Dead Cell Recordings, no doubt of a fact, have an upcoming musical talent on their hands who is on their way for the big time.
If his EP, Requiem, is anything to go by, then Joey Collins is set on becoming a musical star in his own right. A further showing of his musical talent, his song, ‘Time Becomes Our Musical Saviour’, was selected as ‘track of the week’ by Dean Jackson on BBC Radio Nottingham on the BBC Introducing segment. Performances at various venues in Nottingham such as The Bodega and Rescue Rooms has helped him acquire a massive following and with upcoming appearances at the Dot to Dot festival it can only get bigger.
However, for the moment enjoy his debut album and be amazed by Joey Collins’ musical abilities, a talented musician in the making.
Here’s a track guide for which songs to listen out for:
Top notch: ‘Like a Fool’
Ambient Pleasure: ‘In the Time Between the Seconds’ and ‘Bushido’
Soulful Listening: ‘Sober’
The One You’ll Want to Listen to Again: ‘Angels’
