Review: BBC Radio 1Xtra in Ibiza

By Kayah Hazell

It’s been a week and I’m still reeling from my 1Xtra Summer! BBC Radio 1Xtra flew to San Antonio, Ibiza and took over the legendary beach club ‘Ibiza Rocks’ for a jam-packed day of Urban music, for the second year running.
The doors opened at 2pm and the crowds gathered shortly after in the sweltering 36-degree heat and enjoyed the variety of DJ sets and live performances.
DJ Ace, the host of the weekday ‘Everything RnB’ show and one of the longest serving presenters on 1Xtra, kicked off the main event with an hour and a half of tunes to get the crowd hyped. Ace had the unfortunate job of delivering the news that UK rapper Ms Banks was unable to attend.
The crowd soon forgot their disappointment when Yxng Bane jumped on stage with his new bleach blonde hairdo. He performed all his hits including a solo version of he and Yungen’s 2017 chart topping single ‘Bestie’.
DJ Target took to the decks and entertained the crowd until KidaKudz blessed the stage. He of course, performed ‘Snack’. The song he shares with Ms Banks, which catapulted him into the limelight earlier on this year. Jay1, the Coventry based rapper made an appearance and performed a number of tracks from his debut mixtape ‘One Wave’, before handing over to the Queen of UK dancehall Alicai Harley.

Alicai represented well as the only remaining female artist on the line-up. She had the crowd in a frenzy with her high energy show, she danced and jumped around the stage, no matter how out of breath she became, her vocals somehow remained unmatched.
As the sun set over Ibiza, the lights, lasers and confetti cannons came into play. The likes of 1Xtra newbies Snoochie Shy and Tiffany Calver DJed in between Sneakbo and Wstrn’s performances.
Wstrn, now operating as a duo, blessed the crowd with a medley of all the tunes that made their career so successful, starting with their debut song ‘In2’ from 2015, finishing with their latest release, ‘Maggie and Stardawg’.
The night ended with UK music legend Donaeo who took us on a trip all the way down memory lane to 2009 when the Funky House era was in full swing. The crowd partied hard to the likes of ‘African Warrior’ and ‘Devil in a Blue Dress’ before the night came to a close.
BBC Radio 1Xtra successfully created an unforgettable experience!
