Fabulously fascinating, incredibly informative, gloriously gruesome…Real Bodies The Exhibition is an unforgettable experience for sure.
It is so easy to take our bodies for granted, so this exhibit is useful in that it provides you with the opportunity to take a moment to acknowledge and appreciate its form and functions in its entirety.
The exhibition is split into 10 incredible galleries, each of which lead you on a journey of scientific discovery: Anatomist’s Study, Breathe, Hunger, Rhythm, Move, Think, Love, Beginnings, Death and Repair.
Throughout the showcase there are a breath-taking 200 real-life anatomical human specimens on display for you to ponder, and every item has been purposefully preserved for scientific purposes.
It is safe to say that this exhibition, which is held at the NEC in Birmingham, is like nothing I have ever seen before. Upon entry the scene is immediately set with moody, dark lighting and eerie spotlights casting a glow on the specimens, and a talented musician continued to add to the somewhat spooky atmosphere with the hauntingly beautiful sounds of his violin instrumental.
The galleries are intimate and well conceptualised, breaking down the different scientific elements in a way that allows the everyday individual to understand the facts presented to them – there’s no jargon or weighty paragraphs, so you can follow everything easily.
The specimens are really rather extraordinary – seeing human body parts up close and personal is both alarming and amazing. The amount of attention to detail and effort put into the display is evidenced when you carefully examine each incredible item and see how every element (no matter how big or small) have been placed together.
There are skeletal artefacts, muscles, blood vessels, organs…a wide array of exhibits displayed on stands and in glass cases. Amidst the galleries there’s also thought-provoking quotes and eye-opening facts that are sure to blow your mind; we definitely learned many new things along the way!

Conclusively, Real Bodies The Exhibition is a wonderful show of marvel and the macabre. It teaches you so much about the glorious human body and has been beautifully presented within its designated space inside the buzzing hub that is the NEC.
It is suitable for people of all ages and is guaranteed to both educate and amaze. I loved exploring all of the different galleries and would thoroughly recommend this exhibition to anyone looking for something a bit out of the ordinary.
