Rapper DMX Sentenced to Prison for One Year

Rap artist and actor DMX was sentenced to one year in prison on Wednesday for tax evasion charges.
DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff in Manhattan. He pleaded guilty to one count of tax fraud in November.
After finishing 12 months in jail, Simmons will then have three years of supervised release, as TMZ reports.
When he was first arrested in July 2017, the rapper was facing 14 charges of tax fraud. He initially pled not guilty and paid $500,000 (£355K) to be released on bail, but later pled guilty to one count in November as part of a deal with authorities. If he had not struck a deal, he could have faced up to 44 years in prison
His lawyers had argued in court filings that a difficult upbringing left Simmons unprepared to deal with the responsibility that came with financial success.
Beside tax charges he had also been arrested because of animal cruelty, reckless driving, drug possession, weapons possession and probation violations. He has had several felony convictions and served prison time in Arizona.
