Pros and Cons to having a car at university

You’ve just started university but you’re still in dilemma as to whether to have your car with you or not.
Here are our pros and cons of having a car at university:
Pros – Easier to get back home
If you start feeling homesick having a car at university makes it far easier to head back home whenever you want to.
Cons – Too easy to head home
Sometimes being able to head home whenever you want to could be a disadvantage. If you go home to much you may miss out on opportunities to socialise and start building friendships.
Pros – Getting your shopping done
We all appreciate how much easier it is to have a car when completing the shopping. There’s nothing worse than shopping bags tearing and your groceries spilling all over the floor.
Cons – You’re the taxi service
Having a car will make you very popular and you may find new housemates and course mates start asking you for lifts so you can help them do their shopping too.
Pros – Excuse for nights off
Sometimes having a night off from drinking once in a while is a good thing so opting to be the designated driver can come in handy.
If you do want a drink, don’t drive!
Cons – Always being the designated driver
Be a designated driver a few times and before you know it your generosity can be taken advantage of – particularly if your student house is quite far out from the nightlife or shops.
There are bound to be other students with cars, so be sure you start a designated driver rota so you can all stay safe while enjoying the first months of uni life.
One thing to remember, if you decide to take your car to university at any point, make sure you have affordable car insurance for students in place.
