PG Tips’s teabags are becoming environmentally-friendly this year. What is the biggest tea company in the UK has announced that all of their teabags will be biodegradable by the end of the year.
Their pyramid-shaped teabags on supermarket shelves from next week onwards will all be fully biodegradable. The company is also aiming to make the rest of PG Tips’ products 100% biodegradable by the end of 2018.
To achieve their 100% renewable and biodegradable teabags, they are getting rid of the polypropylene element. Polypropylene is what makes teabags keep their shape. The teabags will now be made out of a plant-based material.
PG Tips are making a real commitment to becoming more environmentally-friendly and reducing the amount of plastic waste.
“Tea is the most consumed beverage in the UK, with nine billion PG tips teabags sold every year,” said the vice president of refreshment at Unilever, who own PG Tips, Noel Clarke. “Our latest move maintains the same great taste of our tea whilst minimising our environmental impact.”
Co-op have also started working towards making their own-brand teabags biodegradable.
