Patrick Steward Returning to 'Star Trek' in a New Series

Patrick Stewart is officially returning to Star Trek as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in a brand new Star Trek series on CBS All Access. Stewart initially played the role of Picard through seven seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation and four films.
TNG was a groundbreaking series in its day, dealing with sensitive matters such as torture and gender equality as it followed a space crew exploring the universe and occasionally fighting other species, such as the Borg and the Romulans.
TNG clocked seven seasons and 178 episodes on CBS between 1987 and 1994, also generating four Hollywood films after the series’ end.
The series will focus on the character’s life after TNG and is one of a number of shows to come out of CBS’ new five-year deal with Star Trek: Discovery showrunner Alex Kurtzman. The other shows slated include a Starfleet Academy series, an animated series, a limited series and a series based on Wrath of Khan.
Stewart made the announcement at the Las Vegas Star Trek convention, where he surprised fans with the news that he would be starring in a new series that tells the story of Picard’s life after TNG. This series—which is not a reboot of TNG—is part of the expansion of a Star Trek universe at CBS. It comes from Alex Kurtzman, the co-creator and executive producer of Star Trek: Discovery, who has been hired to oversee all new Star Trek content at the network.
Stewart’s last appearance as Picard came in 2002, in the movie Star Trek: Nemesis. Stewart began his acting career in the 1960s, winning a major award in 1979 for his stage performance in Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra in London’s West End. Stewart is also known for a number of television and film roles, including Professor Charles Xavier in X-Men and CIA Deputy Director Avery Bullock in American Dad!
An episode order and debut date for the new series thas not been announced and no scripts have been written yet, but it is likely to be next year at the earliest or even 2020.
