Operation Earth: Celebrating our Amazing Planet

Explore the science of our planet with the WOW! Weekend event, aptly named Operation Earth, which will take place on 10 – 11 March 2018.
This is an incredibly fun and family-friendly showcase filled with amazing science facts, activities and stories that emphasise just how brilliant the planet Earth truly is.
You can even get directly involved by becoming a trainee environmental scientist during an interactive performance that has been arranged in a bid to enhance awareness with the utilisation of a mini version of our planet.
The purpose of this particular exercise is to investigate environmental concerns affecting our land, air and oceans and then try and find practical solutions to these problems with the assistance of Eden’s expert scientists and storytellers.
Operation Earth, a two-year national programme, was developed to engage school-age children and their families with the latest science of the environment, exploring the work of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and how it relates to everyday life.
Many eye-opening and fun-filled activities will run over the course of the weekend; this includes an insect pollination game, origami plant craft, a seed-planting workshop and a chance to explore the microscopic world of flowers and insects.
In addition to this, specialists from NERC’s Soil Security Programme will also be on hand to talk about the science of soil and run activities to discover its incredible properties.
Chris Bisson, Operation Earth programme manager for Eden, commented: “We’re really excited to be hosting the first of our fun and fact-packed Wow Weekends celebrating the science of the environment as well as the scientists who research it.
“Operation Earth is an inspirational and exciting hands-on environmental science programme supported by NERC and everyone can get stuck in with the activities or sit back and enjoy a fun family show with important messages.”
