Following the announcement that Boris Johnson had been elected Prime Minister by Conservative Party Members, the hashtag #NotMyPM began trending on social media.
Many pointed out that the new PM had been chosen by just 0.13% of the British population, and it was the first time that a party membership has directly elected Britain’s prime minister.
The hashtag echoed the #NotMyPresident which started trending on Twitter following the election of Donald Trump in 2016.
That also saw a series of protests take place the following year in Washington known as ‘Not My Presidents’ Day.
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has already announced a rally calling for a general election to take place in Parliament Square this Thursday, 25 July.
In a tweet following the result, Mr Corbyn said: “Boris Johnson has won the support of fewer than 100,000 unrepresentative Conservative Party members by promising tax cuts for the richest, presenting himself as the bankers’ friend, and pushing for a damaging No Deal Brexit.
“But he hasn’t won the support of our country.”
