Myanmar continues to Protest against Militia Coup

Protests sweep across Myanmar to support Aung San Suu Kyi and oppose the Coup by the military force. Anika Khan reports.

Massive crowd of protestors from different cities and towns in Myanmar has taken over the streets to condemn the detainment of Aung San Suu Kyi last week. Here are the latest developments from the country that is going through massive political unrests:

  • Last Monday, 45 people of the National Leading party were reportedly detained by the Myanmar military.
  • The army officials reported that this was done in response to the Voter fraud that took place in the general elections last November.
  • A week after the incident, crowds have come down to the streets to demonstrate against the military coup.
  • The third day of street demonstration that took place today witnessed the biggest number of protestors
  • Although most of the demonstrations were peaceful, police had to use water cannons on protestors in the capital of Naypyidaw.
  • This resulted in several injuries and after numerous appeals from the protestors, the police stopped using the water cannon.
  • The protesters threw multicolored Buddhist flags alongside red banners which represents the party that Aung San Suu Kyi stood for.
  • Protestors were heard chanting different slogans and raised the three-finger salute. Some pleaded to “save democracy” while others demanded the “release of our leaders”.
  • A young student from downtown Yangon said, “We are trying to get our leaders back. We want democracy. Even if the military comes we will not be afraid.”
  • The United Nations published an official statement stating that the” Internet & communication services must be fully restored to ensure freedom of expression and access to information”.

Myanmar is rising to reject the military dictatorship which has plagued their nation for years with the support of leaders, artists, and activists from around the globe.
