If you’re a musician, it makes sense to be part of a bigger band by joining the Musicians’ Union. The MU is the ONLY trade union exclusively dedicated to working for and on behalf of musicians:
“Whether you’re a solo artist or in a band, performing, recording your own music, or collaborate with other artists to record or make music, ensuring you’ve got your rights covered should be high on your list of priorities” says Stephen Brown, Midlands Regional Organiser of the Musicians’ Union.
If you’ve ever been expected to play for nothing, had a hard time getting paid what you’re owed for a gig, needed to get advice on a music contract or your career, worried about protecting your copyright, or had issues about band partnerships or tax, then the MU can help with all of this and more, as well as providing you with free public liability and musical equipment insurance when you’re out playing or recording.
Stephen concludes by saying “It can take you a lifetime to learn all of this stuff for yourself, but who actually has that sort of time when you’re trying to write that killer riff? I often say to musicians that if you present yourself in a professional manner, the industry is more likely to take you seriously, and being in the MU is part of that professional approach. You owe it to yourself”.
Students can join for just £20 per year and receive discounts at various Midlands rehearsal studios.
