Music Monday – Hitlist of the Week!

WhatsOn editor, Adam Humphries has come up with this week’s hitlist of music. Music has an extraordinary power that in one place can heal the soul and rejuvenate, also it can bring a new rush of curiosity. Here is the music list of the week for adding it to your playlist and grooving to it.

Lasse Matthiessen – Lasse Matthiessen returns with dark and glitchy new single ‘Ocean’

Berlin-based Danish singer, Matthiessen, has a new song out which is a love letter to both Germany and his love. Ocean is one of those tracks where even though it sounds upbeat and hopeful the tone of the tune has something of a dark element to it. In regards to the melody Matthiessen isn’t holding anything when it comes to the strength of simplist of human feelings.

If anything, it’s further testament to his talents as a singer-songwriter and musician. Just wears his heart on his sleeve

“A song for open spaces/a high wind pushing through”

When you listen to the actual words you realise how in depth he’s going with the song.

Jim Moir – JIM MOIR aka VIC REEVES ‘Yorkshire Rocks & Dinghy Fights’ Exhibition

Jim Moir, who happens to be another pseudonym from none other than one half of Reeves and Mortimer himself has created another work of art, only this time it’s not from his comic side. Mr Moir/Reeves has made an exhibition.

Yorkshire Rocks & Dinghy Fights’, an exhibition by Jim Moir aka Vic Reeves running from 22nd Sept- 8th October at RedHouse Originals Gallery in Harrogate.

Featuring unseen and original paintings direct from the artist’s studio, this will be the first time Moir has exhibited in his native Yorkshire and will include over 50 new images. As a painter Moir has created his own visual language, blurring the lines between art and comedy, and his work has drawn comparisons with the Surrealist and Dadaist movements of the late 1910s and early 1920s.

Here’s what Moir himself had to say

“When I started doing comedy it was kind of a side-line to my artwork. I’ve never not painted. Now I’ve got to a stage where I thought, I’ve done the comedy. I’ve done the TV. I’ll just do bits on TV and film if I want to do it. But all day long I’m going to paint pictures. That’s what I like doing.”

Yorkshire Rocks & Dinghy Fights opens for two weeks from Thursday 22nd September, with all works available to view and purchase.

Lizzo – About Damn Time

If ever there was a song that had the power to leave you with a positive vibe this us definitely one of them. American rapper Lizzo’s single does just that. About Damn Time is about learning how to love ourselves regardless of our size. When you watch the video you could probably be forgiven of accusing her of trying to promote obesity but it’s when you look at the message as well as her uplifting demeanour you begin to see otherwise

Lizzo – About Damn Time

When you pay closer attention to the lyrics you begin to realise the power behind the meaning she’s giving

“Oh, I’ve been so down and under pressure/
I’m way too fine to be this stressed, yeah/
Oh, I’m not the girl I was or used to be”

Basically you don’t need to be a stick insect to believe yourself beautiful
