Artist: Grimes
Given her association with boyfriend Elon Musk making life difficult as a song writer and artist you have to applaud Grimes’ resilience. There’s been a significant amount of negativity surrounding her and yet here she is with studio album number five which is somewhat darker than anything previously released.
There are some points being made throughout, and some not too subtle, some definite chest poking within lyrics that are acerbic but never full on angry. Miss Anthropocene delves into areas completely untouched previously and comes up trumps on all counts. We’re all pretty familiar with synth pop these days. It’s usually churned out in a highly formulaic way but Grimes has taken it in a new and interesting direction. Those pulsing beats have been joined by an ethereal mood and dark cloudy words. The result is a kind of musical thunderstorm which while somewhat oppressive can still be enjoyed, and can still feel fresh. You suspect this album will be a one off. If it is then you hope some parts of it will be used as inspiration for the future. Miss Anthropocene is a potential classic.
