The 2020 MTV Video Music Awards have taken place amongst a global pandemic, with Lady Gaga taking home the most awards of the night, with 5 awards given for her latest album ‘Chromatica’.
Gaga was also awarded the inaugural ‘Tricon Award’, celebrating her success as a triple icon – an acclaimed singer, actress, and philanthropist.
Gaga also performed a medley of her ‘Chromatica’ hits at the ceremony, including ‘Stupid Love’ and ‘Rain on Me’ alongside Ariana Grande. While accepting the awards, in typical Lady Gaga style, she changed costumes for every acceptance speech, each one more breathtaking than the last – and rather on-trend, featuring a different crazy mask to match each look.
The Weeknd took home the biggest award of the night – Video of the Year – for his massive hit ‘Blinding Lights’ – which he also opened the show with, performing on a rooftop terrace in New York amongst a huge firework display.
Another big winner of the night was k-pop band BTS, scooping 4 VMAs and performing at the event for the very first time since their debut and massive success. Actress and singer Keke Palmer was the host for the show, opening the awards with a dedication to ‘Black Panther’ actor Chadwick Boseman – with Palmer honoring him as “a true hero”.
