There’s a dearth of good old fashioned brass led music at the moment, mostly because it’s old fashioned and has a hard time competing with buff manufactured pop and angry guitar driven teen rebellion. If music is good enough though, then people will listen to it, and they will appreciate it. “Heaven & Earth” is very good indeed. It manages to cover all the bases that you might expect, but is also contemporary so it has a broad appeal. The big band sound is unlikely to be making much of a come back any time soon, however Kamasi Washington might just be showing us what we could be missing.
