Israel Ends Jenin Raid, 12 Palestinians Killed

Israeli occupation forces withdrew from the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday, ending a two-day operation that killed at least 12 Palestinians and injured approximately 100 others. The Israeli army said it was withdrawing its forces after “achieving its goals,” which it said included destroying militant infrastructure and weapons in the camp.

A Palestinian woman walks on a damaged road in the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank, Wednesday, July 5, 2023, after an intense two-day operation that killed at least 13 Palestinians, drove thousands of people from their homes and left a wide swath of damage in its wake

The operation was the largest Israeli raid in the Jenin refugee camp since the 2000-2005 second Intifada. It was met with widespread condemnation from the international community, including the United Nations, the European Union, and the United States.

The Palestinian Authority called the operation a “massacre” and said it would “not go unanswered.” Hamas, the Palestinian militant group that controls the Gaza Strip, said it would “hold Israel accountable” for the killings.

The Israeli army said it came under fire from Palestinian gunmen during the operation, and that one Israeli soldier was killed. However, Palestinian officials said that most of the Palestinians killed were civilians, including two children.

The operation in Jenin is part of a wider Israeli crackdown on Palestinian resistance in the West Bank. In recent months, there has been a surge in Palestinian attacks against Israeli soldiers and civilians. Israel has responded with a series of raids and arrests, and the violence has shown no signs of abating.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is one of the most intractable conflicts in the world. There have been numerous attempts to broker a peace deal, but all have failed. The latest round of violence has raised fears that the conflict could escalate into a full-blown war.

The Impact of the Operation

The Israeli operation in Jenin has had a devastating impact on the camp. Dozens of homes have destroyed, and many families have displaced. The medical clinic in the camp also damaged, making it difficult for people to access healthcare.

The operation has also had a psychological impact on the people of Jenin. Many are afraid to leave their homes, and there is a sense of uncertainty and fear in the air.

The operation has also had a political impact. It has further eroded trust between Israelis and Palestinians, and it has made it more difficult to achieve a peace agreement.

The Way Forward

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a complex one, and there is no easy solution. However, it is clear that the current path of violence is not sustainable. Both sides need to take steps to de-escalate the situation and to build trust.

The international community also has a role to play in helping to resolve the conflict. The United Nations, the European Union, and the United States need to work together to pressure both sides to come to the negotiating table.

Only through dialogue and compromise can the Israeli-Palestinian conflict resolved. The alternative is a future of continued violence and bloodshed.
