A second woman has been arrested in Tehran, Iran, after taking off her hijab in public and holding it out on a stick to show the world. As current rules stand, it is compulsory for women to wear hijabs in Iran. Many women are coming out in protest.
This “act of rebellion” comes at a time when a wave of protests against the lack of women’s social and political freedoms has swept across the country.
Women all across the country are defying the Iranian hijab rules on a daily basis. This is the second arrest made for similar reasons. The first woman was arrested just last month for taking her hijab off in public in protest of the national rules that she believed oppress women’s rights and freedoms.
Women’s defiance of these rules were partly sparked by the My Stealthy Freedom campaign started on Facebook by activist Masih Alinejad who asked women to come out in protest of the worlds by posting photos of themselves hijab-free.
Since these arrests were made, many women have come out in solidarity by standing defiantly in public places.
