Historic Defeat of Theresa May in Brexit Vote

Prime Minister Theresa May was left “crushed” and “humiliated”, as her Brexit deal has been rejected by 230 votes, the largest defeat for a sitting government in history.
The vote was originally due to take place in December, but Mrs May delayed it to try and win the support of more MPs. The defeat is a huge blow for Mrs May, who has spent more than two years hammering out a deal with the EU.
MPs voted by 432 votes to 202 to reject the deal, which sets out the terms of Britain’s exit from the EU on 29 March.
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has now tabled a vote of no confidence in the government, which could trigger a general election. The confidence vote is expected to be held at about 1900 GMT on Wednesday.
Daily papers said May’s deal was sunk after the huge vote against the agreement struck between May’s government and Brussels, as she prepared to fight a no-confidence motion on Wednesday.
The Sun has gone all-out, delivering a classic. “Brextinct”, is its headline and they have pasted May’s face onto a dodo. Presumably the headline intends to speak to the prime minister’s tenure as much as her deal.
“May suffers historic defeat as Tories turn against her,” said The Guardian’s front page.
The Daily Telegraph’s front page read: “A complete humiliation”, following the 432 to 202 vote by MPs to reject the deal.
The Daily Mirror’s front page said: “No deal, no hope, no clue, no confidence”. The tabloid called her “the humiliated PM”.
In Reality, May has no majority of her own in Parliament. Some 118 Conservative MPs from both the Leave and Remain wings of her party voted with the opposition parties against Mrs May’s deal.
