A young mother and her baby have been killed by a grizzly bear in Canada’s Yukon territory, a coroner said.
Gjermund Roesholt found the bodies of his wife, Valerie Theoret, 37, and 10-month-old daughter Adele Roesholt near Einarson Lake, a remote area 400km from the territory’s capital of Whitehorse.
Coroner Heather Jones said Ms Theoret and Adele appeared to have been out for a walk in the remote wilderness sometime between 10am and 3pm when the attack occurred.
According to the coroner’s report, Ms Theoret and Adele appeared to have been out for a walk in the remote wilderness sometime between 10am and 3pm when the attack occurred.
She was a grade six French immersion teacher at Whitehorse elementary school, was on maternity leave with her child. She and partner Gjermund Roesholt had planned to spend some of those months on their trap line – a large parcel of land leased from the government to trap animals for fur. They loved the outdoors and were familiar with the risk posed by bears.
Roesholt killed the animal before reaching home. After getting his family’s bodies, he made an emergency call to the closest village, Mayo, home to around 200 people.
