Government Rejects Proposal for a "Latte Levy"

The government has put a stop to what would have been a very important step on the war on single-use plastic waste. Putting an extra charge on disposable coffee cups might have taken the UK one step closer to their mission to reduce plastic waste.
The environmental audit committee had put forward a proposal to put a 25p levy on the use of disposable coffee cups – which cannot be recycled as other waste can – and that the levy would then be used to fund other recycling measures.
Despite the PM Theresa May declaring war on plastic waste earlier on this year, the government has finally decided to reject said proposal.
“The UK’s throwaway culture is having a devastating impact on our streets, beaches and seas. Our report recommended practical solutions to the disposable packaging crisis. The government’s response shows that despite warm words they plan no real action,” the Labour MP, who is also the chair of the environmental audit committee, Mary Creagh said.
