German Healthcare Workers Start 2-Day Strike in Protest of Salary and Funding

Several thousand healthcare workers are anticipated to go on a two-day warning strike beginning on Tuesday in Germany

German healthcare workers will strike for two days this week, starting on Tuesday, according to the Verdi trade union. Emergency services, care institutions, hospitals, and psychiatric offices would all get impacted nationwide.

Prior to fresh salary negotiations beginning on March 27. Union Ver. di said that the “cautionary” strike will fire a warning shot over the government’s bow.

State and federal governments offered their members 3% this year, and 2% next year. As well as a tax-free unconsolidated total of €2,500 (£2,200) divided over the two years. But its members refused the offer.

Germany now has an 8.7% inflation rate for the consumer price index. Ver. di is requesting at least a 10.5% pay increase or an additional €500 (£440) each month.

Warning of Healthcare Workers

Healthcare professionals caution that the industry might collapse without significant investment.

Energy expenses for a typical medium-sized hospital get expected to increase by €6 million (£5.3 million) this year. As a result of rising energy prices brought on by US and EU sanctions on Russia. Which was Germany’s primary supplier until its war with Ukraine last year. 96% of hospitals confess they can’t cover expenses with current income, and 2 out of 5 believe they fear insolvency.

They include the centralization of specialized services in fewer, larger hospitals. And the promotion of outpatient treatment, which unions claim is a pretext to eliminate jobs and rooms.

Ver. di claims an upsurge in founder and other contributions: “Citizens have to face more and more medical spending themselves. More and more ill patients involve urgent care from fewer and fewer nurses.

Berlin’s resolve to reduce health spending contrasts sharply with its commitment to increase military spending by about €100 billion (£90 billion) stated last year.

However, on Monday, Bavaria, Rhine-Westphalia, and Schleswig-Holstein announced they intended legal counsel on the constitutionality of Health Minister’s reform plans. This would fundamentally alter how hospitals and clinics are compensated for treating patients. As well as encourage the premature discharge of seriously ill patients.

Airport workers who work in ground and aircraft security. They went on strike once more on Monday in support of their need for better pay.
