Extinction Rebellion Sets Out 2020 Strategy

By Alice Hudson
Extinction Rebellion have set out their strategy for furthering and achieving their goals in 2020. There are four key points that they have addressed; people power, vision, a movement of movements, and building Extinction Rebellion UK inner strength.
People Power
They aim to bring a million people into active support, and ensure 50% of the population see the Climate Emergency as a top priority by;
> prioritising collaboration with diverse groups and using varied approaches for mass mobilisation
> supporting mobilisation in local communities by supporting local campaigns to stop harmful practices
> supporting the work of young rebels by collaboration and listen to their needs
> moving people’s hearts and minds through the stories that they tell, calling them to action and waking them up to the crisis
Vision
They aim to enact their demands by piloting new participatory systems in democracy, media and economics by;
> leading the conversation about the underlying causes of the environmental crisis by exposing corporate media and the damage of economic systems on the Earth, and offering alternatives
> creating a multimedia platform for their own news
> pushing for leaders to join a Global Citizens’ Assembly on Climate and Ecological Justice, and being prepared to fund an inclusive, independent assembly should world governments fail
A Movement of Movements
They aim to grow Extinction Rebellion’s connection to wider movements for change through building stronger relationships and partnerships. They will do this by;
> reaching out to find common ground and work with other movements
> widening the diversity of Extinction Rebellion through active support, training, and collaborating
> supporting roadshows and outreach events with the aim to connect majority work communities with UK movements
> standing alongside and learning from other communities such as the indigenous, marginalised and those most affected by the ecological crisis
Building XR UK Inner Strength
‘We will live the change.’ Extinction Rebellion want to improve internal systems and build regenerative cultures. They will do this by;
> uniting around a shared story and vision for the future that priorities to be set, and work across the whole organisation to be towards shared goals
> aligning their systems and culture with their vision for the world, with regard to leadership, power and privilege
> welcoming all people, encouraging a culture of respect, self-responsibility, learning and personal development
> focusing on key internal systems such as finance, decision making, information sharing, conflict resilience, feedback, and learning
