Everything Sucks! – Review

Genre: Comedy
Cast: Jahi Di’Allo Winston, Peyton Kennedy, Patch Darragh
‘Everything Sucks!’ is a charming new Netflix teen series that centres on the students at Boring High School in Boring, Oregon, in 1997. This is a show about relationships, self-identity, and the awkwardness that comes from being a teenager.
It begins by introducing us to three freshman friends: Luke, Tyler, and McQuaid. But when the three join their school’s AV Club, the focus soon shifts to the friendship between Luke and fellow club member (as well as the principal’s daughter) Kate Messner. That is when the show really starts to get good, but it gets even better when they move beyond that relationship to focus on the characters individually.
The show is so sincere and sensitive in its treatment of its young characters -especially the two main ones, Luke (Jahi Di’ Allo Winston) and Kate (Peyton Kkennedy)- as well as their respective single parents, played by Patch Darragh and Claudine Nako, that it succeeds in making you care deeply about what happens to them. On more than one occasion, ‘Everything Sucks!’ illustrates the parallel insecurities and joys in the lives of the kids and their parents in incredibly touching ways.
The writing is heartfelt and genuine and the actors really bring those feelings to the screen. A good soundtrack and tons of 90s references makes this series fun to watch. It is said it is trying to be a 90s Stranger Things, but it is obviously not the case, considering one deals with creatures from another dimension while the other focuses on exploring sexuality and dealing with the ups and downs of growing up. It is also so refreshing to see a young lesbian lead in a series.
If you grew up in the 90s, this show is for you.
