England, the birthplace of Cricket, has won the World Cup for the first time after more than 40 years of waiting. It was an incredible, astonishing final against New Zealand.
New Zealand and England both made 241 in their respective 50 overs. After tying England then made 15 in the Super Over. New Zealand equaled it. But England hit 26 boundaries to New Zealand’s 17 in the entire match and therefore was crowned the winner.
The game gripped audiences throughout, before even more twists and thrills in the final over.
On a cloudy and chilly morning in north London, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and elected to bat first despite the last two World Cup finals being won by the chasing side.
England’s hero Ben Stokes, made an unbeaten 84 in the original 50-over game, combined with Jos Buttler to score 15 off Trent Boult’s six deliveries in the super over. He was made Man of the Match.
England were all but out of the game at 86-4, squeezed by New Zealand’s skilful bowling, sharp fielding and smart tactics. For a few split seconds, New Zealand could have won the World Cup.
England’s captain Eoin Morgan said: “It’s been an absolutely incredible journey … I still can’t quite believe it.”
New Zealand’s captain Kane Williamson, who was made player of the tournament, said: “Just gutted … There’s a lot of disappointment.”
