Defying Rules Amazon Employees Protest Company’s Climate Failures

Over 300 Amazon workers publicly criticize the company for not taking sufficient action on the climate crisis, despite their jobs being at risk for speaking out.

357 employees signed an online protest, organized by an advocacy group founded by Amazon workers called Amazon Employees For Climate Justice.

It comes after Amazon threatened to fire two employees for speaking out against its climate failures, claiming they violated the policy.

“It’s our moral responsibility to speak up, and the changes to the communications policy are censoring us from exercising that responsibility”, an employee said.

Workers see Amazon’s hypocrisy as the company has already pledged to use only renewable energy sources in the future and become net-zero carbon by 2040. But it continues to work with and improve the businesses of oil and gas companies.

“The science on climate change is clear,” writes Amelia Graham-McCann, a senior business analyst at the company. “It is unconscionable for Amazon to continue helping the oil and gas industry extract fossil fuels while trying to silence employees who speak out.”

“I want Amazon to continue its vision to be Earth’s most customer-centric company,” writes Melissa Reeder, a senior UX designer. “By ending our contracts with oil and gas companies, we can show the world we put people over profits and be a leader against climate change.
