Climate activist blocked roads in Central London

Climate protestors took over the streets in central London and blocked roads, disrupting the MP’s return to the parliament. Anika Khan reports.

Thousands of protestors shut down major roads in Manchester city center and many extinction Rebellion activists blocked the Parliament square earlier today. They have called out the government to take action on the climate crisis and announced a two-week civil movement until the government listens to their calls.

The protests proceeded after the Climate and Ecological Emergency bill which was due to be tabled on Wednesday didn’t take place. The Bill if passed would have led to the creation of a citizen assembly. This assembly would have ensured the targets that were laid back in the 2008 Climate change act on emissions and aviation were carried out diligently.

After a few protestors were dragged away by the police over blocking the roads, the representative of the Extinction Rebellion said that they are prepared for the consequences that are coming on their way. She said that these people are here because they are passionate and strongly believes that the government needs to bring in changes. She condemns the government for their negligence that has put millions of lives at risk.

Protestors have been urging the MPs to back the Bill. They have planned to hold a ‘Carnival of Corruption theatrical protest’ and a ‘walk of shame’ at the Bank of England in the next 10 days. They vowed to disrupt London until their demands are met and the bill is passed.
