Brazil announces £60bn for recovery of degraded farmland!

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio “Lula” da Silva has announced a 27% rise in the “harvest plan” for sustainable agriculture.

Brazilian government intends to recover 30 million hectares of degraded farmland rather than rely on deforestation. The concern is not just at Amazon deforestation but at the cutting of the Cerrado in Brazil, home to world’s most species-rich Savannah.

What is the Harvest Plan?

The Harvest Plan is part of a package of measures on agricultural sustainability. Which includes the restoration of the National Food Council, which subsidies small-scale farming and the delivery of its produce across the country. The project of restoration by the government is with the Chinese agricultural firm Cofco.

What does the plan Consist of?

China is Brazil’s biggest trading partner where in Brazil is China’s highest distributor of farm produce including chicken, beef, soybeans and sugar.

The outcome of the plan

This plan if works, brings great impact on the green development of agriculture. This plan looks to develop a green economy to sustain the Amazon region without deforestation. This will include certification of forest products, technological assistance for producers, provision for infrastructure. Also energy and internet connection, and the backing of ecotourism.
