The Covid-restrained Grammys were a mostly female-fronted affair, with wins for Billie Eilish, Megan Thee Stallion, Dua Lipa, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift.
Billie Eilish took home record of the year for Everything I Wanted but dedicated her speech, the night’s final, to Megan Thee Stallion. “You deserve the world, I think about you constantly, I root for you always,” she said. “Can we just cheer for Megan Thee Stallion, please?”
Megan also used her time to thank fellow female stars. Visibly giddy, she accepted the award for best rap performance by remembering the mantra inspired by her childhood idol and fellow Houston-bred star: “What would Beyoncé do, but make it a little ratchet.”
Beyoncé broke the record for all-time wins by a woman and any singer male or female with 28 Grammys when she snagged the best R & B performance for “Black Parade.” “I wanted to uplift, encourage and celebrate all the beautiful black kings and queens who have inspired me and the whole world,” she said.
Taylor Swift also earned one of the biggest wins of the night as became the the first female artist to win the Album Of The Year Grammy Award three times as she was recognized for Folklore .
Dua Lipa won Best Pop Vocal Album for Future Nostalgia .“I feel like there’s been a lot of female empowerment and lots of women winning awards tonight. And so it’s been absolutely amazing to just be alongside all that, to feel that energy,” said backstage.
The 63rd Annual Grammy Awards were held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Hosted by Trevor Noah, the ceremony was packed with pre-recorded and live performances by the likes of Lipa, Taylor Swift, Post Malone, DaBaby, Black Pumas and Mickey Guyton. Cardi B and Megan teamed up to perform their summer single “WAP” in one of the raunchier moments of the night.
