The primary goal of the mission is to get Bangabandhu-1 into orbit. The satellite will eventually travel to a path 22,000 miles above Earth, where it will provide telecommunications coverage for Bangladesh and surrounding areas. It’s the first time the county will send a communications satellite to this high of an orbit.
The satellite, which has cost the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission USD 250 million. The spacecraft was built by the Franco-Italian company Thales Alenia Space, and will provide TV broadcasts and telecom services throughout southeast Asia. The satellite is called Bangabandhu-1, meaning “Friend of Bengal,” a reference to Mujibur Rahman, who led the country to independence in 1971.
So far, India has been reigning in that space by offering satellite-based services where none were available to its smaller neighbours. India to face stiff competition as Bangladesh gears up for first communications satellite launch. Bangladesh’s launch is likely to start a price war in the region.
A statement from Thales Alena said: “Once the Bangabandhu satellite-1 is operational, Bangladesh will be autonomous in terms of telecommunications and broadcasting services, being able to offer communications services to many foreign countries such as Nepal, Myanmar or Bhutan under its coverage area.”
