And the 2018 Bafta awards could go to…
The 2018 BAFTA nominations were announced first thing Tuesday morning. As expected, most of the main contenders with award nominations have also been recognised by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
The main difference is the inclusion of more British films in the categories.
Films such as Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool, Paddington 2 and The Death of Stalin have all got nods in the main categories, whereas Steven Spielberg’s The Post seems to have slipped Bafta members’ mind.
The Shape of Water leads the pack of nominees with a whopping twelve nominations, including Best Film, Director, Leading Actress and Supporting Actress. It has also been recognised for its technical, visual and sound magnificence.
Darkest Hour and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri follow with nine nominations each in both main categories and technical ones. They have both been nominated in general and British categories. It is expected that Gary Oldman will make off with the Best Actor award like he did in the Golden Globes last week.
Blade Runner 2049 and Dunkirk have each achieved an impressive eight nominations. The visual spectacle that is the new Blade Runner seems to have been overlooked so far but Bafta has recognised it for its daring and beautiful imagery. Denis Villeneuve and Christopher Nolan are both up for Best Director and their nominations are mostly in technical, visual and sound categories.
Films Beauty and the Beast, Baby Driver, Star Wars: the Last Jedi, War for the Planet of the Apes, Victoria & Abdul and Wonder are all nominated in Costume, Hair and Make-Up, Production Design or the technical categories.
The ceremony is bound to change substantially.
After twelve years as master of ceremonies, Stephen Fry announced that he would not be hosting the awards this year. Joanna Lumley was announced as his replacement at the presentation of nominees event.
The 2018 Bafta awards will take place on Sunday 18 Febuary at the Royal Albert Hall and an edited version of the show will be broadcast on BBC One shortly after the prizes have been awarded.
