Australia’s worst Whale Stranding

Over 380 dead Pilot whales have been found dead in the harbour in West Tasmania which has been recorded as the worst Whale stranding in Australian history.

Australia has witnessed one of the worst mass strandings in its history, with 380 dead whales on Wednesday Afternoon. The rescue effort that started on Tuesday managed to save 30 whales from the Sandbanks inside Macquarie Harbor.

The coordinator of the rescue team from Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service stated that while the team was fighting to save the 50 whales, they had to also divert their focus on the disposal of all the dead whales that were stranded.

60 rescuers led by the Tasmanian government Marine Conservation Program embarked on the rescue mission on Fraser Flats. They managed to lift 25 whales off the sandbanks to the open water on Tuesday. 2 out of the lot got stranded again into the banks. On Wednesday, they saved 25 more.

40 government workers, 20 volunteers, and 17 surf lifesavers joined the efforts since Tuesday. They attached tags to the whales to monitor them. Experts have reported that strandings are a natural event that has caused before and there is little we can do about it.

Pilot whales usually live for up to 40 years. These long-finned marvelous creatures are notorious for standings because of their social structures. They are extremely social and tend to stick to their pods for their entire life span.

The Federal government offered its support to help the Tasmanian government to lead the rescue mission. Australian environment minister expressed her gratitude towards the rescuers while addressing these heartbreaking events.
