The 2019 A-level results day saw the number of students achieving top grades in the UK fall to its lowest level in over a decade.
This year’s results saw about 25.5% of students achieving a grade A or higher, the lowest it has been since 2007 when the number of students achieving an A or higher was 25.3%. For the most part it is girls who have achieved higher grades, with about 25.5% of them achieving a grade A or higher. This means girls have retaken the lead from boys, as 25.4% of boys had achieved a grade A or above. Overall, the pass rate has stayed the same as last year which is 97.6%.
The Joint Council for Qualifications has also released it figures, which showed that the number of girls taking three sciences has overtaken the number of boys, sitting at 50.3%. This compared to the figure 49.6%, which was the amount of boys who took three sciences. Although when it comes to choosing physics as an A-level subject, the number of boys was 30,159, a lot higher compared to the number of girls, which was 8,799.
