Coronavirus Updates

COVID-19 has impacted the world in numerous ways, both economically and environmentally, and is still continuing to develop across the globe.

Here are some important and up-to-date facts that you need to know about the pandemic as it’s unfolding:

• The total number of infected cases across the world currently stands at 2,417,977 as of 19 April 2020, and the total number of global deaths stand at 166,066 while the number of global survivors stands at 628,384. However, these numbers are only of reported cases, so these numbers are likely to vary from the actual totals.

• China has reportedly managed to flatten the curve, which is igniting hope for other countries that are currently reaching the peak of the virus.

• According to research by Johns Hopkins; China, India, South Korea and Japan are the Asian countries with the highest reported cases. The Hubei province of China reports 68,128 cases, India has 17,615 cases, Japan has 10,797 cases and South Korea has reported 10,674 cases. Indonesia has reported the most casualties.

• In Europe, Spain has the highest number of cases at present at 200,210, Italy second-most with 178,972 cases. France has 152,894, Germany has 145,743 and the UK has 120,067.

• In Africa, the confirmed number of coronavirus casualties stand at 1,080, as of 19 April 2020.

While the global impact of COVID-19 on capitalism and geopolitics continues to unfold, we can be sure that it will take a long time to recover from.

State leaders need to look towards their policies to see how they can best support economic growth, healthcare and climate change measures, and work with technological leaders and grassroots organizations to better prepare for the future.
