Whether you’re in the UK or in America, the momentum and energy surrounding the Black Lives Matter movement needs to be harnessed to enact real changes. Here are five ways you can make a change and support this movement with real-world actions.
- Sign all of the global petitions and take a stand for what is right. When we all use our voices together, we can demand justice not only for George Floyd and his family, but for victims of racist injustice across the globe. Make white privilege and systematic racism a compulsory part of the British education course.
- Support black-owned businesses. There are many ways to show up for a community, and one of the most important is by investing your money with black-owned businesses which are competing with huge corporate businesses.
- Join a protest/demonstration. Make your voice heard and stand next to members of your community. Take up physical space and show the world that you stand in solidarity with this movement.
- Make a donation. Consider making a donation. Bail funds are currently overwhelmed with donations, so consider donating to ‘The American Civil Liberties Union‘ which provides legal assistance wherever civil liberties are at risk, or ‘Fair Fight‘ which ensures fair elections and combats voter suppression in America.
- Contact your local government. Demand accountability from your legislators. Write a letter to Gavin Williamson (Secretary of State for Education) to apply pressure directly to demand the inclusion of Black History in the UK curriculum.
