A decentralized political and social movement called Black Lives Matter (abbreviated BLM) aims to draw attention to racism, discrimination, and racial injustice that black people face. When its supporters congregate, they do so mostly to denounce instances of racialized violence and police brutality against black people. It began after the murders of several people, including Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Pamela Turner, and Rekia Boyd. The movement and the groups that support it frequently push for a number of legislative reforms that are thought to be important for black emancipation. While some organizations, like the Black Lives Matter Global Network, simply call themselves “Black Lives Matter,” the entire movement is a decentralized network of people and organizations without a formal structure. The phrase “Black Lives Matter” itself is still not protected by a trademark. The vast majority of its public protests have been peaceful, despite the movement’s reputation among some as a violent one.
