Venice Film Festival announces 2021 line-up

The line-up of the 78th Venice Film Festival has been announced by festival president Roberto Cicutto and artistic director Alberto Barbera. The festival will begin from September 1 to 11 this year.

This year the festivals include some high profile films like Pablo Larrain’s Spencer; Paolo Sorrentino’s The Hand Of God; Michel Franco’s Sundown; Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Lost Daughter; Gaston Duprat and Mariano Cohn’s Official Competition; Jane Campion’s The Power Of The Dog; Stephane Brize’s Un Autre Monde and Ana Lily Amirpour’s Mona Lisa And The Blood Moon.

  • With the previously announced Dune (Warner Bros), Paul Schrader’s The Card Counter (Focus), and Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel (Disney), Barbera also beat the return of major US projects.
  • This year the festival took a step for gender balance, with five female directors selected in the main competition, down from last year’s eight. 26% of films in the overall line-up are directed by women, down from 28% in 2020.
  • Horizons Extra as a new section was also announced which will be held by a public-facing offshoot of the Horizons sidebar with an audience award.
  • Pedro Almodóvar’s Parallel Mothers will open the festival in competition.
  • Bong Joon Ho, Chloé Zhao, Cynthia Erivo, and some more will preside over the competition jury.
  • The Giornate degli Autori line-up will be announced at a later date.
