Chords
- D: Place your index finger on the 2nd fret of the A string, your middle finger on the 2nd fret of the D string, and your ring finger on the 2nd fret of the G string
- G: Place your index finger on the 3rd fret of the high E string, your middle finger on the 3rd fret of the A string, and your ring finger on the 2nd fret of the low D string
- A: Place your index finger on the 2nd fret of the low E string, your middle finger on the 2nd fret of the A string, and your ring finger on the 2nd fret of the D string
- Bm: Place your index finger on the 2nd fret of the high E string, your middle finger on the 3rd fret of the A string, and your ring finger on the 4th fret of the D string
- F#m: Place your index finger on the 2nd fret of the low E string, your middle finger on the 3rd fret of the A string, and your ring finger on the 4th fret of the D string
Rhythm
- Master the basic strumming patterns: down-down-up-up (D..D..U..U) and down-down-up-down-up (D..D..U..D..U). These patterns are the foundation for playing many popular songs.
- Practice keeping a steady rhythm. Use a metronome or drum machine to help you stay on time.
- Experiment with different strumming patterns to create different sounds and textures.

- Tuning: Turn the tuning pegs until the strings are in tune with the standard ukulele tuning: D-G-B-E.
- Strumming Pattern: Practice the strumming pattern DDUDU or DDUUDU. These are basic strumming patterns that can be used for many songs.
- Chords: Learn the chords D, G, A, Bm, and F#m. These are some of the most common chords used in ukulele songs.
- Finger Placement: Place your fingers on the fretboard correctly for each chord. Make sure your fingers are pressing down on the strings firmly and that your thumb is not touching the fretboard.
- Practice: Practice playing the chords and strumming pattern until you can do it smoothly and without thinking about it.
- Play Songs: Once you have mastered the basics, you can start playing songs. There are many popular songs that can be played on the ukulele, so you’ll have plenty to choose from.
