Having grown up in a strict Muslim Iraqi household, coming out as non-binary fundamentally changed the author’s relationship with their family. In Unicorn, Al-Kadhi traces their journey of self discovery and how it affected family life. At times outrageously funny and often deeply moving, Unicorn is above else about Al-Kadhi’s relationship with his mother and the importance of being true to oneself.
