Trump's State of the Nation Address Divides Congress

President Donald Trump delivered his State of the Nation speech yesterday. Response from the members of Congress present once more highlighted how the United States is currently a country significantly divided.
Trump summed up his first year in the presidency as an “extraordinary success” talking about the state’s growing economy and saying that by carrying on the same path the US would once again return to national greatness.
However, some would disagree and say it has been a chaotic year for the White House. The administration has been shadowed by investigations into Trump’s links with Russia, his blatant and constant attack on the media and a list of sexist and racist remarks and attitudes.
His speech received cheers from members of his party while Democrats were divided in their response – some clapped, some remained seated and silent.
In this divisive environment, Trump called for the formation of “one team, one people, one American family”. “Tonight, I call upon all of us to set aside our differences, to seek out common ground, and to summon the unity we need to deliver for the people we were elected to represent”, said Donald Trump.
The proposed wall on the Mexican border once again reared its ugly head. Trump called for compromise on the subject of migration. He agreed to give legal status to 1,8m Dreamers in exchange for a restricted immigration system.
North Korea was also present in the speech. Trump called for greater defence spending mentioning the nuclear threat that North Korea could pose to the US. “We must modernise and rebuild our nuclear arsenal, hopefully never having to use it, but making it so strong and powerful that it will deter any acts of aggression”, said president Trump.
Some of Donald Trump’s less-savoury qualities were brought under a harsh light when women present wore black in solidarity with the #MeToo movement, while president Trump, who has received many sexual misconduct accusations, delivered his speech.
