Tobias Menzies to Replace Matt Smith as Prince Philip in The Crown Season 3

It has been confirmed that Tobias Menzies will play the royal Prince Philip in seasons three and four of ‘The Crown’. He will be replacing Matt Smith after his portrayal of the monarch through seasons one and two.
Menzies has played Brutus in HBO’s ‘Rome’, Edmure Tully in ‘Game of Thrones’, and the dual roles of Frank Randall and the sadistic Black Jack Randall in ‘Outlander’. He most recently wrapped the Duke of Cornwall in ‘King Lear’ alongside Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson for BBC Films and Amazon Studios. He’s also currently starring in AMC’s ‘The Terror’.
Smith’s replacement announcement is a result of the controversy after it was revealed that the actor was paid more than Foy despite her being the most senior figure on screen. Originally, Prince Philip was set to be played by Paul Bettany, but the ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ actor refused the role because of some schedule conflicts.
The series has to change its cast as the royals aged in the story. Menzies will be joining Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth, taking the role from Claire Foy, and Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, first portrayed by Vanessa Kirby, in ‘The Crown’ season 3 and 4.
‘The Crown’ was a runaway success after its launch in 2016. Even the second season of the show garnered many positive responses. The show is created by Peter Morgan and will return with its third season. The air date is yet to be announced.
Season two left off with the birth of Prince Edward in 1964. The Crown’s third season will cover at least the years from 1964 to 1976. It will also tackle the affair that broke Princess Margaret’s marriage. The show will start filming this summer.
Seasons three and four will be filmed back-to-back, which will hopefully make for a shorter wait for season four. The Crown’s third season is expected to arrive on Netflix before the end of 2018.
