Since the start of the Black Lives Matter protests three weeks ago in response to the death of George Floyd, there have been some great achievements as a direct response of the demonstrations. Here are some of the impressive accomplishments that you may not have seen.
- The 4 officers who were responsible for the death of George Floyd have since been fired, and they all currently face charges.
- The University of Minnesota has cancelled the contract and severed ties with the police department.
- Louisville Metro Council are a step closer to banning no-knock search warrants in response to Breonna Taylors killing
- Us Embassies across Africa, in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, DR Congo, have condemned police murder of George Floyd.
- Bus drivers in Minneapolis and New York City refused to help with police transportation of Black Lives Matter protestors.
- The Minneapolis public schools ended their contract with the police department.
- A confederate monument in Birmingham, Alabama, was removed.
- A confederate soldier statue was removed in Alexandria from the Old Town Intersection.
- A resolution has been proposed in San Francisco which aims to prevent law enforcement from hiring officers with a history of misconduct.
- The Minneapolis City Council members publically called for a disbanding the police and for this to be replaced with community-oriented, nonviolent public safety and outreach capacity.
- The US Army told its soldiers to disobey any orders to attack peaceful protestors.
- LA announced $100-150 million cuts from the LAPD budget and called for this to reinvested into communities, a moratorium on gang database, sharper discipline against abusive cops, in effect immediately.
With the Black Lives Matter movement gaining more momentum across the globe, we are set to see even more historic changes in the coming months.
