A police officer and two women has been killed by a gunman in a shooting at a hospital in Chicago, authorities said on Monday.
Officer Samuel Jimenez, joined the force in February 2017, was gunned down as he went to the aid of other officers who had been called to Mercy Hospital & Medical Center around 3:20 p.m. about an assault. Jimenez, 28, was married with three small children. He’s the second Chicago police officer killed in the line of duty this year, the most since 2010 when five officers were fatally shot.
The shooting began as a verbal altercation between a man and a woman near Michigan Avenue outside of the Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in the city’s Bronzeville District. He turned and repeatedly shot the woman in the chest. He then entered the hospital and continued firing, Gray said.
The shooter was killed; it is unclear if the shooter was killed by police or took his own life.
Mercy Hospital and Medical Center has a rich history as the city’s first chartered hospital. It established in 1852, while the Sisters of Mercy religious group converted a rooming house. Both Union soldiers and Confederate prisoners of war got treatment from this hospital during the civil war, according to its website.
