The hero of Hotel Rwanda on trial

The Civil war that took place in Rwanda, Africa in 1994 between the Hutus and Tutsis is perhaps one of the most gruesome genocides that occurred in recent history. If you have watched the movie, ‘Hotel Rwanda’ you would be familiar with the name Paul Rusesabagina on whom the movie is based upon.

Paul saved the lives of over 1200 people by hiding them in his hotel for which he was awarded the highest civilian honor in the USA by George Bush back in 2005. After surviving Cancer, the 66-year-old lived a normal retired life in Texas. Little was he aware of the terrorism charges that were formulated in Kigali, Rwanda against him.

Rusesabagina left Rwanda back in 1994 right after the genocide in which more than 800,000 people were killed. Although away from home, he continued to raise his voice against the president of Rwanda, Paul Kagame for the last 20 years. For this very reason, he and his family have been on the radar of the security services for a very long time.

On 26 August, Rusesabagina left America to travel to Dubai to attend some important meetings. However a day after he arrived in Dubai, he went missing.

Logbooks have revealed the possibility of the Rwandan government taking him to Kigali by a private jet on 28 August.4 days later the possibilities were proven right and he was brought in front of the media from Kigali in handcuffs.

He was arrested as an international warrant in accusation of being the founder and sponsor of FLN’s operations. His family and lawyers said that the claims are absolutely groundless and baseless.
