Pop singer Taylor Swift has co-written a song with Andrew Lloyd Webber, titled “Beautiful Ghosts” for the upcoming movie ‘Cats’ which is written specifically for Francesca Hayward’s character, Victoria.
The movie will feature ‘Beautiful Ghosts’ and will be the only newly written song for the remake version. Swift has also recorded her own studio version, which will be played over the end credits.
Taking inspiration from the original T.S. Eliot poetry used in the original musical, the song’s was composed by Webber while Swift handled the lyrics.
“T.S. Eliot is such a specific type of writer and uses such specific language [and] imagery, and so reading through his work and everything, I just really wanted to reflect that,” said Swift.
Swift, Lloyd Webber, and Co. managed to keep the new tune under wraps for almost a year, and as the video explains, the pair “spontaneously” decided to write the song during a rehearsal for her film performance of “Macavity the Mystery Cat.”
In the film the ballet dancer Francesca Hayward, who plays the white feline character of Victoria, sings “Beautiful Ghosts.” This has been expanded from the stage version to make it more central to the plot.
“We’re actually gonna be recording a song that Andrew Lloyd Webber and I wrote together,” said Swift in a short clip before footage of the pair working together was published.
The movie is directed by Oscar-winning director Tom Hooper and stars Jennifer Hudson, Idris Elba, Jason Derulo, Ian McKellen, Rebel Wilson, and James Corden.
Universal Pictures dropped a little snippet of the new song.
