Salman Muqtadir is a household name in Bangladesh. He is recognized as the first Bangladeshi Youtuber and garnered a fanbase for his musical talent and comedy skits. His you-tube Channel Salmon the Brown fish & The Putimaas has currently over 1.5 million subscribers. Sanjida Tanmoy caught up with this Social Media star to talk about mental health, internet bullying, and the future of Youtube for Bangladesh.
Salman Muqtadir was born on 9 August 1993 in Australia. He started his career when he was just a teenager and very soon his youtube channel got popular for his witty videos. All his videos had some deeper messages which he presented mixing with comedy. Salman is a Mega YouTube Star. His channel earned 70 million views by the end of 2017 only.
In a conversation with him, he explained his idea of how he got the ideas to make videos in the first place. He said, “My friend who was better than me in the academy was wasting their time by gossiping and hanging out. I did not want to waste my time like others. So I searched YouTube to find some you-tuber in Bangladesh but couldn’t find anyone. That’s when I got the idea that I can be a you-tuber and become the first Bangladeshi content creator.”
He added, ” I got the idea of this channel from my teacher in Sydney, who couldn’t spell my name correctly.” His teacher used to tease him by calling him Salmon fish. So he mixed this salmon fish idea with his brown skin tone, and founded his channel name ‘Salmon the brown fish’.
Salman opened up about cyberbullying and his controversies but he said that he never let them get to him. He tries to keep himself neutral at all times. But what bothered him the most is “when people talked about families or closed ones”. He meets the internet bullies with savage replies and does not let the negativity get the best of him.
” I believe the people who love me love me for my personality and those who didn’t want him before never like me anyway,” said Salman.
Salman Muqtadir also talked about the lack of education related to mental issues in Bangladesh. As a person who suffered and lived through some difficult times, he said “nobody ever overcomes these issues permanently.”
He thinks some people become strong at dealing with these issues. For him, he can easily deal with all those things and can never go mad about it.
He never could share his issues with his friends. When he went for treatment, he faced several problems. He felt disconnected from his doctor at first. Later he got another therapist and that lady helps him deal with his issues.
Drawing from his own experience Salman said, “Bangladeshi people should be more liberal about mental health issues. Doctors need to be more welcoming. Therapy helped me and I believe it can help a lot of people out there.
Salman Muqtadir is also a musician who composes music from time to time. He said,
“I do Not have much idea about music and lyrics but i pick is a good tune to go with”
