US politician and recognised social activist David McReynolds has died aged 88.
The long-time pacifist, who was acknowledged for his efforts as a democratic socialist, and was known to many as a “hero of the antiwar movement”, sadly died last Friday at a Manhattan hospital.
David twice ran for president, and did so openly as a homosexual man, and he described himself as a “peace movement bureaucrat” whilst undertaking a career with the War Resisters League.
His contribution to the organisation lasted a staggering 40 years. As a staff member he prioritised counter-recruitment and he also helped develop one of the first draft card burnings.
In his efforts to make a difference, Mr. McReynolds caused a lot of ripples. He managed to catch the attention of the FBI and his activism – on several occasions – led to him being sent to jail for his controversial movements.
It is safe to say that David McReynolds will be remembered for his bold behaviour, resilient approach to work and his positive contributions to society.
