Genre: Sci-fi
Director: Steven Spielberg
Cast: Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Mark Rylance.
The film, adapted from the cult book by Ernsest Cline and directed by Steven Spielberg, will be out next month.
Renowned filmmaker Steven Spielberg thinks that in the near-future, virtual reality will be the next big superdrug, and that’s what he tells us in the latest preview clip for ‘Ready Player One’. Meanwhile, Ernest Cline says, “I could not have written ‘Ready Player One’ if I had not grown up on a steady diet of Steven Spielberg movies.”
The film is set in 2045, in a world on the brink of collapse due to global warming and an energy crisis. The story follows teenager Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), who likes to escape his dangerous real world by logging into Oasis, which is a virtual reality universe created by James Halliday (Mark Rylance). The Oasis functions as an alternate society, and also a MMORPG. When Halliday dies he leaves his fortune to whoever can find a digital Easter egg hidden in the Oasis.
Wade fights against powerful corporate enemies and competitors who will do anything, in the Oasis and the real world, to reach the fortune first. Olivia Cooke is Sam, a Canadian blogger who goes by the handle Art3mis in Oasis and ends up joining forces with Wade, while Ben Mendelsohn is nefarious corporate-type Nolan Sorrento.
When Ernest Cline’s first book ‘Ready Player One’ was released in 2011 it immediately became a bestseller. The film rights were purchased by Warner Bros. on the same day that Ernest Cline got his publishing deal. Now, with Steven Spielberg in charge, the film is set for release on 30 March 2018.
