On The Come Up

Author: Angie Thomas
Expectations were high with this one but Angie Thomas has proved that The Hate U Give wasn’t a fluke. On The Come Up is an example of YA writing at its best. Bri dreams of becoming a rapper. When her mother loses her job fulfilling her dream might be the only way of keeping her family afloat. On The Come Up is rich in themes and believable characters, and full of emotion. Above all, it is the story of Bri’s struggle against poverty and institutional racism. Angie Thomas has a great gift for storytelling. She draws from personal experience and a deep understanding of what the black community goes through on a day-to-day basis to bring to life stories that matter, stories to highlight important issues and to educate young readers. With this new novel, Thomas has proven that she is truly on the come up. She is here to stay. Writing a new novel after such a great debut was not going to be easy but Thomas has delivered yet another gem. I for one can’t wait to see what she has in store for us next!
