COVID-19 updates: Covid Variant continues to rampant Africa

The total number of Covid-19 cases have reached 107,950,666 across the world. The death toll stands at 2,367,355. The pandemic is far from being over.

  • The World Health Organization has dismissed the theory of the virus being leaked from a laboratory and has given credence to the virus’s transmission from frozen food.
  • Meanwhile, Covid-19 new Variant has been detected across six countries in Africa including, Botswana, Comoros, Ghana, Mozambique, Zambia, and Kenya.
  • The Director of African Disease Control and Prevention asked to roll out the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine despite questions over its use against the variant.
  • Public health officials in the USA have said that people who have received the covid vaccine can skip the 14-day standard quarantine routine even if they are exposed to the infection.
  • India has vaccinated more than 7 million front-liners with COVAXIN and AstraZeneca dozes. The opposition government has asked to halt the supply of homegrown vaccines until they successfully go through all the trials.
  • Pakistan has agreed to allow private companies to import Covid-19 vaccines with the exemption of price caps.
  • In Bangladesh, River 337,769 people have been vaccinated in Government health facilities. Over 277 people have reported side effects so far.
  • Ireland had extended lockdown until April. Prime Minister Martin said, “Certainly we are looking at a continuation of high levels of restrictions until the Easter period.”
  • Coronavirus has hit the UK hard, with the country recording more than 3m cases and 115,000 Covid-related deaths so far. Boris Johnson is preparing to introduce strict measures to tackle the pandemic.
  • AstraZeneca reported that it might take from six to nine months to produce a vaccine that will be effective against the new variant of COVID-19.
